1,900 Government Buildings In Jammu And Kashmir Go Solar; Targeting 20,000 More By December 2025
Rooftop solar power plants in 20,000 buildings add 300 MW
According to Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner Secretary of Science and Technology, about 1,900 government buildings in Jammu and Kashmir had rooftop solar power plants installed as part of a substantial programme. By the end of 2025, another 20,000 structures are expected to be solarised. There are 22,494 registrations for government offices in the Union Territory, with a sanctioned load of about 486 megawatts.
Bhagat gave information during a conference led by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo to assess the state of preparation for reaching the target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He revealed that about 1,900 structures have already undergone solarisation, with a total capacity of 27.61 megawatts. He highlighted the possibility of adding 300 megawatts through the installation of rooftop solar power plants in the 20,000 structures that are left.
Chief Secretary Dulloo emphasised the need to fully utilise solar energy in the Union Territory and suggested interacting with significant market participants like NHPC, NTPC, or SECI. He recommended giving the required funding and subsidies to the organisations carrying out the programme in Jammu and Kashmir and underlined the significance of researching the viability and potential of each government building.
Dulloo gave the department instructions to survey the designated structures in the upcoming weeks and then create a model contract and comprehensive project reports for each district. In order to create a clear plan of action for accomplishing the challenging aim of solarisation, he stressed the importance of studying successful precedents in other states or Union Territories and suggested obtaining technical aid from respectable organisations.
