India’s fuel consumption is expected to rise 2.7 per cent  in the next fiscal year beginning on 1 April, initial government estimates show

In the fiscal year 2024-25, fuel consumption in India is projected to experience an uptick, reaching 238.954 million tons compared to the revised estimate of 232.561 million tons for the current fiscal year, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), a unit of India’s federal oil ministry.

Specifically, domestic demand for gasoline, primarily utilized in passenger vehicles, is anticipated to see a 5.4 per cent increase, reaching 39.2 million tons. Diesel consumption is also expected to rise by 2.7 per cent, reaching 92.4 million tons. Aviation fuel consumption is projected to surge by over 8 per cent to 9 million tons, surpassing the estimate of 8.3 million tons for the fiscal year ending March 2024.

In terms of other petroleum products, the consumption of bitumen, used in road construction, is expected to grow by 3.4 per cent, while demand for naphtha is predicted to decline by 7.4 per cent. Additionally, there is a forecasted 4.1% increase in demand for pet coke, a more environmentally friendly alternative to coal, reaching 20.1 million tons. Furthermore, the demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a common cooking fuel in the country, is estimated to grow by 2.4 per cent, reaching 30 million tons, as per the PPAC data.
