Chennai would be the first city in India to produce 750 MLD water from desalination plants

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin inaugurated a new desalination plant with a capacity of 150 million litres per day (MLD) in Nemmeli, Chennai, aimed at providing drinking water to approximately nine lakh residents. This marks the third desalination plant in Chennai, further bolstering the city’s water infrastructure. During the inauguration, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted Chennai’s pioneering status in India for producing 750 MLD water from desalination plants, encompassing existing facilities such as the 100 MLD plants in Nemmeli and Minjur, the 150 MLD plant in Nemmeli, and the ongoing 400 MLD plant in Peru.

In addition to the inauguration of the desalination plant, Chief Minister Stalin presided over the introduction of 95 water supply and municipal administration projects. These projects include the unveiling of a green building for the Greater Chennai Corporation and the laying of the foundation stone for 29 initiatives valued at Rs 1,902 crore. Noteworthy among these projects is the Kodungaiyur biomining project, indicative of the government’s commitment to addressing crucial environmental and infrastructure needs in the region.
