Hydrogen To Become Cornerstone Of India’s Energy Security, Says Puri

Green hydrogen is set to diversify India’s energy mix, boost economic competitiveness, and strengthen energy security while advancing the country’s net-zero ambitions
Hydrogen is not only the fuel of the future but also a key pillar for India’s energy security and economic competitiveness, union minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has stated.
Addressing stakeholders in the energy sector, Puri highlighted that hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, will play a crucial role in diversifying India’s energy mix, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and supporting the country’s net-zero goals. He emphasised that hydrogen can serve both industrial and transportation sectors, offering a low-carbon alternative to conventional fuels.
The minister noted that India’s policy push on hydrogen is designed to attract investment, promote innovation, and create employment opportunities. “Hydrogen is central to India’s clean energy transition. It offers not only sustainability but also strengthens economic resilience and global competitiveness,” Puri said.
India has been steadily scaling up its hydrogen strategy, with production hubs planned in states with abundant renewable energy resources, including wind and solar. Incentives under the National Hydrogen Mission, coupled with support for research and development, aim to create a robust hydrogen ecosystem encompassing production, storage, and distribution.
Industry experts welcomed the government’s focus, noting that hydrogen adoption could significantly reduce carbon emissions in power, steel, and transport sectors while enhancing energy security. Analysts also pointed out that cost competitiveness and infrastructure development remain key challenges that will require coordinated policy support.
As global energy markets pivot towards low-carbon alternatives, hydrogen is expected to become a cornerstone of India’s energy strategy, providing a sustainable pathway to meet rising domestic demand while supporting climate goals.
