MNRE Approves 2,000 MWh Solar Battery Storage Project In Rajasthan

The project is expected to help meet evening demand and stabilise renewable supply

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved Rajasthan’s proposal to establish a battery energy storage system (Bess) of 2,000 megawatt-hours to strengthen the state’s solar power network. The installation will use a four-hour battery cycle, allowing surplus solar power generated during the day to be stored and used during high-demand evening and morning hours.

According to the Rajasthan Energy Department, this new unit will be the third large-scale storage facility in the state, taking its total planned capacity to about 6,000 MWh. Two earlier projects with a combined 4,000 MWh are already under development.

The 2,000 MWh plant would form the final lot under the present Bess expansion plan, though additional capacity could be added later depending on grid performance and demand growth. The project aims to reduce dependence on costlier grid or exchange power during peak consumption periods and reinforce India’s commitment to its renewable energy targets under the National Electricity Plan.
