New Agroecological Studies Strengthen Climate-resilient Farming Systems
IFAD-backed research by Access Development Services highlights pathways to boost smallholder incomes and reduce post-harvest losses
Access Delopment Services, with support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has released five value chain studies focused on advancing agroecological transitions in Indian agriculture. The studies, conducted under the Grant for Agroecology Programme (GAP) Fund, examine the production and market systems of cashew, turmeric, capsicum, garlic, and black pepper—crops vital to both livelihoods and ecological sustainability.
The research outlines measures to enhance market linkages, strengthen local processing, and cut post-harvest losses that continue to constrain smallholder profitability. It also points to gaps in certification, aggregation, and infrastructure that limit the commercial scaling of agroecological produce.
Speaking on the occasion, Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, emphasised that policy must enable smallholders to evolve from producers to value creators. He said strengthening farmer producer organisations (FPOs) is essential for ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth.
James Marc de Sousa-Shields, Country Director (India), IFAD, noted that agroecology bridges the goals of environmental conservation and rural prosperity. He said IFAD’s partnership with ACCESS is aimed at creating replicable models that link ecological farming to viable markets.
Access CEO Mr Vipin Sharma said the GAP Fund demonstrates how ecological practices can be integrated into market systems without compromising farmer incomes. “Agroecology is not only about environmental balance but also about economic empowerment,” he said.
The initiative also recognised enterprises advancing agroecology-led business models and brought together experts to discuss certification frameworks, climate adaptation, and the financial viability of sustainable farming practices.
