India Set To Achieve 5 MMT Green Hydrogen Capacity By 2032: MNRE Secretary

MNRE Secretary cites global uncertainties for possible delay in meeting 2030 target under National Green Hydrogen Mission

India is likely to reach its target of producing 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen annually by 2032, two years later than planned, due to prevailing global uncertainties, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

Speaking at the 3rd International Green Hydrogen Conference, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, MNRE, said, “We may slip on the target of annual production capacity of green hydrogen of 5 MMT by 2030.” He added that the goal could instead be achieved by 2032.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The initiative targets 5 MMT of annual production capacity by 2030, along with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 gigawatts.
