Bhupender Yadav Reaches Brazil To Lead India’s Engagement At COP30
Yadav will take part in climate negotiations, presenting India’s perspective on adaptation, climate finance and other key issues
Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav has arrived in Belem, Brazil, to represent India at the United Nations climate conference COP30, where negotiations on adaptation, climate finance and implementation are expected to intensify this week.
In a post on X after landing in Belem, Yadav said he would be participating in climate change negotiations and “putting forward India’s view on matters related to adaptation, climate finance and other critical issues”, adding that he was looking forward to “productive conversations”.
COP30, the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is the annual multilateral forum where almost all countries meet to review progress on climate goals, including limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, strengthening support for vulnerable nations and advancing the shift to net-zero emissions by 2050.
This year’s conference is expected to focus on translating political commitments on climate finance and just transition into clearer delivery pathways. Leaders, negotiators, businesses, youth groups, Indigenous communities, scientists and civil society representatives are scheduled to take part in formal negotiations and thematic discussions through the week.
India is likely to underline the need for scaled-up and predictable climate finance, equity in burden-sharing, and stronger support for adaptation in developing countries, in line with its stated position in previous climate conferences.
On the diplomatic front, Yadav’s visit comes shortly after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Canada, where both sides noted recent progress in bilateral cooperation and explored opportunities in trade, investment, health and technology.
