Cairn Cuts 76,220 Tonne CO2 In FY25 Sustainability Push
Sustainability report shows 305,220 tonne emission reduction and 3.11 million GJ energy savings over five years, backed by large-scale plantation and methane pledge
Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group, has reported a reduction of 76,220 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions from its operations in the financial year 2025, equivalent to planting 8,219 trees every day of the year, in its latest sustainability report.
The report, themed ‘Inspiring Actions, Fostering Impact’, sets out the company’s sustainability performance and reflects what it calls a commitment to turning inspiration into meaningful change. Over the last five years, Cairn has recorded a cumulative reduction of 305,220 tonne of carbon emissions, described as equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of 15 million trees, and has conserved 3.11 million gigajoules of energy in the same period.
The company said it has planted about 800,000 trees and mangroves across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, and is nearing its goal of two million trees by 2030. It has also pledged to reduce absolute methane emissions by 30 per cent over the next five years.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, non-executive director at Vedanta and chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, said sustainability at Vedanta is guided by “India’s timeless ethos of balancing progress with responsibility” and that “protecting the planet is central to how we take decisions, going beyond compliance and cost to create long-term value for our communities and the environment”. She said she was proud of the progress made by the oil and gas business in cutting emissions and described Cairn’s reduction of more than 300,000 tonne of carbon emissions over five years, equivalent to planting 15 million trees, as “a strong reflection of this commitment”.
Jasmin Sahurity, chief operating officer at Cairn Oil & Gas, said the company “stands at the forefront of India’s energy transformation, committed to increasing domestic production, while safeguarding the interest of the planet and people”. She said Cairn had made “incredible progress over the years towards Net Zero Carbon goal” and that the ESG report reflects its commitment to achieving its vision while “pioneering sustainable excellence”.
Cairn said that beyond its vision of contributing 50 per cent of domestic crude production, it has made significant achievements across environmental, social and governance priorities.
