Adani Electricity supplied 1,200 MW of power from renewable  sources to Mumbai for four hours on Diwali day. This accounted for over 40 per cent of the city’s power needs during that time. The company relied on wind and solar generation to achieve this milestone. Adani electricity plans to increase the percentage of power sourced from renewable sources to 60 per cent  by 2027

Adani Electricity, a prominent power utility company, announced on Monday its reliance solely on renewable sources for supplying power to Mumbai during a four-hour period on Diwali day. Between 10 AM and 2 PM, Adani Electricity successfully delivered 1,200 MW of power from renewable sources to its 3 million subscribers. This accounted for over 40 per cent of the financial capital’s power requirements during that timeframe.

The peak demand for power in Mumbai on Sunday morning exceeded 2,500 MW and rose to 2,776 MW in the evening. The city, grappling with pollution concerns and an ongoing effort to improve air quality, has been facing challenges in managing its power supply. A significant portion of the electricity supplied to Mumbai is sourced from neighboring regions. Recently, state authorities urged a rival power generation company to reduce particulate matter emissions from its plant by half to contribute to pollution reduction.

In a strategic move, Adani Electricity had pre-planned the transition to renewable sources, specifically sourcing power from solar and wind generation. Managing Director Kandarp Patel emphasized the significance of achieving 100 per cent renewable energy during this period, marking a noteworthy milestone in Mumbai’s energy transition. Patel highlighted that this initiative demonstrated the feasibility of renewables in powering Mumbai reliably and sustainably, all while maintaining competitive tariffs.

The company’s official statement revealed that, in 2023, Adani Electricity has already sourced 38 per cent of the power supplied to consumers from renewable sources. Moreover, the company expressed its commitment to further increase this proportion to 60 per cent by 2027. This reaffirmation underscores Adani Electricity’s dedication to advancing the use of renewable energy in Mumbai’s power landscape.
