Kiren Rijiju  highlighted the importance of the private sector’s involvement in manufacturing Doppler radars under the ‘Make in India’ initiative 

 Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of Earth Sciences, has said that India is set to take the lead in climate studies and weather forecasting after Prime Minister Modi invited him to speak at the COP28 World Climate Action Summit in Dubai. India’s critical role in mitigating climate change is highlighted by this accolade. Rijiju is in favour of more private sector participation to meet India’s request for additional Doppler radars, which are an essential component of accurate local weather forecasting. Notably, as part of the festivities honouring the 150 years of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) contribution to the country, Rijiju introduced the IMD logo.

The fact that Prime Minister Modi was one of the invited leaders of state to address the recent COP28 in Dubai emphasises how important India is to the fight against climate change. The notion of ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ (LiFE) was presented by the Prime Minister, who also called on the international clean energy community to make significant progress towards its implementation.

According to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), India has met its 2030 commitments ahead of schedule, according to Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Environment, Forests and Climate Change. Rijiju underlined the need of increased private sector involvement and the requirement for more Doppler radars in order to provide precise local weather forecasts.

Rijiju noted India’s growing importance as a manufacturing hub with production-linked incentive schemes and advocated for private sector involvement in Doppler radar manufacture under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. In order to highlight the worldwide importance of climate change issues, he urged the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to involve schoolchildren in its year-long celebrations.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, M. Ravichandran, emphasised the need for improved public awareness and outreach initiatives, stressing the significance of effectively informing the public and stakeholders about IMD’s meteorological and climate services. DG of the IMD, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, outlined the development of the IMD logo from its founding in 1875 as the department commemorates its incredible 150 years of service to the country.
