Hon’ble Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar To Inaugurate The World Sustainable Development Summit 2024 In New Delhi

World Leaders to unite for sustainable solutions needed in this crucial decade of action for global communities at the Summit

 

The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) is set to kick off on February 7, 2024, with the Hon’ble Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, presiding over the inauguration. Esteemed guests including the Prime Minister of Guyana, H.E. Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips, and Bhupender Yadav, Hon’ble Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India, will also grace the inaugural ceremony. Ministers from Spain, Kiribati, and Fiji are anticipated to participate as well. This 23rd edition of WSDS will convene pivotal conversations aimed at propelling global ambitions and actions across all levels. Scheduled from February 7-9, 2024, at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, the summit, organized annually by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) since 2001, stands as the foremost independently convened international gathering focused on sustainable development and environment rooted in the Global South. With the overarching theme of ‘Leadership for Sustainable Development and Climate Justice,’ WSDS 2024 is poised to foster innovative solutions and strategies for a sustainable and equitable future.

In a preview event for the media, Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, emphasized the anticipation of engaging discussions and the critical role of visionary leaders in advancing sustainable development globally. She stressed the urgency of addressing climate change as a shared reality, necessitating a shift towards cleaner energy and adaptation measures. Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri, Former Diplomat and Distinguished Fellow at TERI, hailed WSDS as a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices to drive progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Dr Shailly Kedia, Curator of WSDS and Senior Fellow at TERI highlighted the Summit’s role in addressing the complex challenges of sustainable development and climate action through polycentric leadership. Underlining the urgency of climate action, she underscored the Summit’s focus on themes such as nature and ecosystems, energy, climate action, adaptation, resilience, and sustainable consumption.

With diverse perspectives expected from leaders worldwide, WSDS 2024 aims to create momentum for a more sustainable and equitable world for present and future generations.
