India’s Renewable Energy Leadership Highlighted At World Sustainable Development Summit 2024

India’s proactive renewable energy initiatives and call for equitable emissions draw attention at World Sustainable Development Summit 2024

India is making significant strides in its journey towards sustainable energy, as highlighted by R.K. Singh, the Hon’ble Cabinet Minister overseeing Power, New & Renewable Energy. Speaking at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2024, Singh emphasised India’s impressive renewable energy capacity, constituting 44 per cent of the country’s total power generation capacity. He noted, “India’s commitment to renewable energy exceeds its targets, with 180,000 megawatts sourced from non-fossil fuels, including 18,700 megawatts from renewables alone.”

Singh underscored India’s proactive approach to emissions reduction, citing the country’s per capita emissions of 2.6 tons, well below the global average of 6.8 tons. “Despite our low emissions, we pledged to reduce emissions intensity by 45 per cent by 2030, achieving a 33 per cent reduction ahead of schedule,” he stated. Singh highlighted India’s unique position as the only major economy to fulfill its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) early, a feat acknowledged by independent observers.

Looking ahead, Singh outlined India’s ambitious targets, with plans to exceed its renewable capacity to 50 per cent, potentially reaching 60 per cent or even 65 per cent by 2030. He acknowledged ongoing challenges in accessing finance and technology but remained optimistic about India’s commitment to sustainable development. Singh emphasised the need for a fair transition, addressing historical emissions and supporting developing countries’ aspirations for growth.

Echoing Singh’s sentiments,  Nitin Desai, Chairman of the Governing Council, emphasised the importance of equitable per capita emissions in global climate discussions. “India’s commitment to limiting emissions aligns with a per capita target of 1.8 tons annually, far below what other major emitters are projected to emit,” Desai remarked. He highlighted India’s commendable progress towards this target and called for collective action to mitigate climate change.

Desai stressed the need for a shift in global dialogue, urging developed nations to consider cumulative responsibilities and per capita emissions. “The focus should be on long-term sustainability, not just short-term reductions,” he emphasised. Desai reiterated India’s commitment to sustainable energy transition, emphasising the role of the newly established Energy Transition Center in developing global strategies.
