Building Water And Wastewater Infrastructure For A Sustainable Future

Government has sanctioned 402 projects so far, of which 224 are already complete and the rest are in various stages of progress

With millions relying on rivers for drinking, household use, and irrigation, they have long been the lifeblood of civilisation in India, bearing cultural and spiritual significance. However, rapid population growth, poorly planned urbanisation, and industrialization, coupled with a lack of effective wastewater treatment, have left many rivers polluted with effluents and toxic substances. Water availability is plummeting, and projections suggest a significant decline by 2050.

To address these challenges, the Government of India has initiated various river development and rejuvenation projects. The National Mission for Clean Ganga, led by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, focuses on sewage treatment infrastructure to clean the Ganges River. The government has sanctioned 402 projects, with 224 completed and the rest in progress, to bolster wastewater treatment infrastructure.
