Sterlite Partners With Green Mobility To Deploy LNG Vehicles For Transportation

Sterlite Copper has partnered with Green Line Mobility Solutions to launch a pilot project deploying Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vehicles for transportation. The initiative was officially launched at Vedanta’s Copper Plant in Silvassa on 16 September 2024.

As part of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitment, Sterlite Copper plans to use LNG-powered trucks to transport finished goods to the North Zone, replacing conventional diesel-powered trucks. This switch is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and lower particulate matter emissions by 90 per cent compared to diesel trucks. In the fiscal year 2025, the shift to LNG vehicles has already helped the company reduce its carbon emissions by 2.10 tonne of CO2 equivalent.

Puneet Khurana, CEO of the Copper & Nickel Business at Vedanta, emphasised the importance of this initiative. “We are proud to be partnering with Green Line and working together towards building a greener and cleaner future. This initiative is a significant milestone in our journey towards carbon neutrality. At Sterlite Copper, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices across our operations.”

To ensure safety and efficiency, the new LNG vehicles are equipped with 24×7 GPS tracking and smart cameras. These cameras monitor driver fatigue, ensuring the safety and well-being of the drivers, while also adding an extra layer of security for both the vehicles and their cargo.

The adoption of LNG-powered trucks aligns with Sterlite Copper’s broader ESG goals under the “Sterlite Cares” sub-brand, which is centred around three core pillars: people, planet, and possibilities. Through these efforts, the company continues to demonstrate its dedication to sustainable development while making meaningful progress towards its environmental goals.
