Incorporate Sustainability Into Engineering Curriculum, Says IIT Goa Director

While highlighting the need for engineers to integrate sustainable practices into their work, Dhirendra Katti, Director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Goa has said that the future of the profession must extend beyond technical expertise. He called for a stronger focus on sustainability, emphasising that engineers should be well-equipped to tackle environmental and social challenges alongside technical tasks.

Speaking at the 57th Engineer’s Day event, organised by the Institute of Engineers (India) Goa State Centre in Panaji, Katti stressed the importance of developing engineers who can address modern challenges holistically. He also pointed out the significant role engineering institutes play in fostering this approach by incorporating sustainability into their curriculam.

Katti acknowledged the reality that many engineers work in organisations where profit is often the primary objective. He pointed out that in many cases, there is limited emphasis on pursuing sustainability if it impacts profitability. However, he noted that the engineering community has the potential to change this mindset by advocating for sustainable solutions that are beneficial both for the environment and for business in the long run.

The event, which commemorated the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, a pioneering Indian engineer, centred around the theme of sustainability in engineering. Katti’s address aimed to inspire current and future engineers to view their roles through a broader lens and contribute meaningfully to sustainability efforts.

The discussions at the event concluded with a focus on how engineering standards and practices must evolve in the coming years to balance technological progress with environmental preservation.
