Sustainable Packaging Drives Growth In India’s $450 Billion Food Industry: Report

India’s packaging market, now valued at over USD 86 billion, has become the third-largest globally, surpassing Japan. The growth of the packaging industry has been driven by the surge in demand for online food delivery and packaged products, a trend accelerated during the post-pandemic period. According to a report by IMARC India, the packaged food market is projected to reach USD 3.4 billion by 2027. The food processing industry, representing 32 per cent of the total food market, remains a key driver of India’s economy, contributing 14 per cent to the manufacturing GDP and 13 per cent to exports.

Speaking at the event, Suresha, President of the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists India (AFSTI), highlighted the importance of the dairy sector, which accounts for 20 per cent of the overall food industry. India is targeting 300 million metric tons of milk production by 2030, up from the current 230 million metric tons. Additionally, grain production has exceeded 330 million metric tons, positioning India as a major player in global food production.

Nilesh Lele, President of the Chamber for Advancement of Small and Medium Businesses (CASMB), pointed out that the agri-food industry contributes approximately 16 per cent to India’s GDP, with dairy being a significant part. The sector is seeing rapid growth in value-added dairy products, such as ghee, cheese, and butter. Technological innovations, including extrusion, are transforming the snack production industry, and the adoption of packaging solutions has been instrumental in reducing post-harvest losses and extending the shelf life of food products.

Government initiatives like Atma Nirbhar Bharat are further supporting the growth of food processing, providing incentives such as tax exemptions and subsidies for women-led startups. These initiatives aim to boost India’s competitiveness in the global food market while encouraging sustainable business practices.

Sagar Singh, Joint Director at the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), underscored the importance of industry-friendly regulations and the alignment of Indian packaging standards with international benchmarks. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is also revising its packaging and labeling standards to improve the quality of Indian food products.

The packaging industry’s role in enhancing food safety and shelf life was further emphasised by Prasad Balan Iyer, Director of the SIES School of Packaging. He noted that India’s packaged food market, valued at USD 2.8 billion in 2023, is projected to grow to USD 6.4 billion by 2029, driven by shifting consumer preferences and increased demand for convenient food options.

The event showcased a range of innovations from key players in the food and packaging technology sectors, including companies like Brenntag Ingredients India, IMCD, and Synthite Industries. Fi India & ProPak India 2024 provided a platform for industry collaboration and knowledge sharing, highlighting the growing significance of sustainable packaging solutions in the food industry.

Supported by leading industry associations such as AFSTI, CASMB, and the Health Foods and Dietary Supplements Association (HADSA), the event continues to strengthen its relevance in shaping the future of India’s food and packaging sectors.
