Shaping A Responsible Digital Future

Tech Mahindra fuses sustainability and innovation to reduce emissions and pioneer environmentally responsible IT transformations

Over the past year, Tech Mahindra has made notable advancements in renewable energy, circular economy and water conservation efforts. “We have made significant progress in increasing renewable energy usage across campuses, contributing to a 31 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to our FY16 baseline,” says Sandeep Chandna, Chief Sustainability Officer at Tech Mahindra.

Eight of the company’s 13 owned locations are now certified as Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL), and it aims for 100 per cent certification by FY26. Tech Mahindra has also focused on water conservation through rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling systems, committing to environmental stewardship.

Sustainability & Innovation

Tech Mahindra integrates sustainability in business strategies, particularly IT and digital transformation. The company’s science-based targets, validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), align with global commitments like the Paris Agreement. Tech Mahindra has committed to reducing emissions by 22 per cent by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2050. Chandna explains, “We are leveraging green IT solutions and optimising data centres for energy efficiency, including the launch of our Green CodeRefiner, which optimises existing code to meet green standards. This innovation helps reduce the environmental impact of IT systems, ensuring that sustainability is at the forefront of our digital transformation efforts.”

Innovation plays a pivotal role in Tech Mahindra’s sustainability journey. The company has deployed energy-efficient technologies, such as advanced cooling systems and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning units, significantly reducing energy consumption across its facilities. Additionally, Tech Mahindra’s Green IT and Software Sustainability offerings assist companies in adopting eco-friendly coding practices, leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud technologies to reduce operational carbon footprints. “We are promoting sustainable mobility solutions within our workforce, encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles and smart commuting options, which have helped reduce Scope 3 emissions,” Chandna adds.

The Right Track

Tech Mahindra plans to scale its renewable energy usage to 90 per cent by 2030 and implement advanced energy-saving technologies across its facilities. The company aims to enhance its sustainability-focused digital offerings, including ESG platforms and cloud-integrated solutions that will provide more efficient tools for sustainability initiatives.

Tech Mahindra also engages employees through awareness programs and workshops to foster a sustainability mindset across the organisation. The Green Marshals initiative, a dedicated group of employees driving environmental projects, empowers staff to take ownership of environmental goals. Through these initiatives, it is creating a culture of sustainability within the organisation.
