SIAM Hosts 3rd International Conference On Sustainable Circularity To Drive Automotive Industry’s Green Future

The conference emphasizes ‘Nature Positive Recycling’ and India’s role in leading global efforts toward a circular automotive economy

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) hosted the 3rd International Conference on Sustainable Circularity (ICSC) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts to discuss transformative solutions for a sustainable automotive ecosystem. Held on the sidelines of the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the conference focused on the theme “Nature Positive Recycling – Systemic Transformation to Automotive Circular Economy in India.” The discussions underscored India’s potential to spearhead global initiatives in sustainable automotive practices.

The event was inaugurated by Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, who highlighted the critical need for environmental responsibility as the automotive sector continues its rapid growth. Yadav unveiled the SIAM Strategy Paper Towards Circular Future in the Indian Automobile Industry: Integrating EPR Regime in Waste Stream Regulations’, which explores the integration of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) into the regulatory framework. In his address, he emphasized the importance of balancing economic development, emission reduction, and green job creation while fostering sustainable practices through policies like the Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2021 and support for electric vehicles.

The conference also featured a series of panel discussions covering crucial aspects of End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) recycling, including regulatory challenges, technological innovations, and business models that can close the loop on automotive materials. These discussions helped drive forward the dialogue on creating a circular economy in the automotive sector.

A notable highlight of the conference was the unveiling of a co-created handbook, Automotive Circularity in India: Unlocking a Sustainable Future, by SIAM and Recykal. Mahmood Ahmed, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, unveiled the handbook alongside key industry leaders. The handbook offers insights into overcoming challenges in material procurement, end-of-life vehicle management, and outlines a strategic roadmap for transitioning India’s automotive industry from a linear to a circular model.

Rajendra M Petkar, President and CTO of Tata Motors, and Chairperson of SIAM’s Sustainable Mobility Group, along with other influential figures, shared their expertise on navigating the complexities of sustainable practices and highlighted the automotive industry’s pivotal role in shaping a greener future for India and the world.

With a diverse group of stakeholders, the conference was a vital step towards unlocking the full potential of a sustainable, circular automotive economy in India.
