Science Based Targets Initiative Approves Tech Mahindra’s Net-zero Targets

Tech Mahindra becomes the first Mahindra Group company to gain SBTi validation for its climate goals, strengthening its commitment to sustainability
Tech Mahindra’s net-zero targets have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), marking a significant step in its sustainability journey. With this recognition, Tech Mahindra becomes the first company in the Mahindra Group to secure approval for its climate targets from SBTi, joining a select group of Indian companies that have received this validation. The company’s net-zero targets align with the ambitious 1.5°C climate trajectory.
As part of its net-zero commitment, Tech Mahindra has set clear and measurable targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company’s overall target is to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by the end of FY 2035. In the near term, Tech Mahindra aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 58.8 per cent by FY 2030, compared to the baseline year of FY 2016. For the long-term, the company plans to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90 per cent by FY 2035, and it also aims to cut Scope 3 emissions 90 per cent by FY 2035, using FY 2020 as the base year.
Tech Mahindra has already made significant progress in its sustainability initiatives. As of 2024, renewable energy accounts for 31 per cent of the energy consumed at its owned locations and 22.96 per cent of its global energy consumption. Additionally, the company has successfully reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by over 31 per cent compared to 2016 levels. These results reflect Tech Mahindra’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its core operations.
Sandeep Chandna, Chief Sustainability Officer at Tech Mahindra, emphasised that many businesses worldwide are now making SBTi-approved targets a mandatory requirement in their request for proposals (RFPs). He stated that achieving SBTi validation for its net-zero targets is an important step in aligning Tech Mahindra with global sustainability standards. The company remains committed to embedding sustainability into its operations and helping its customers achieve their own ESG objectives through innovation and technology.
Beyond emissions reductions, Tech Mahindra is also incorporating eco-design principles, improving energy efficiency with advanced technologies, and increasing its reliance on renewable energy sources. The company is promoting green mobility by encouraging electric vehicle adoption and providing eco-friendly commuting options for its employees. Additionally, Tech Mahindra works closely with suppliers to promote sustainable practices, conducting regular audits, and offering capacity-building programs to ensure sustainability throughout its supply chain.
