JSW MG Motor India Implements Green Pretreatment Line, Cuts Carbon Emissions By 1,800 Tonne

First OEM in India to adopt ambient temperature phosphate technology for sustainable manufacturing
JSW MG Motor India has declared that it has becoming the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to implement a green pretreatment line in its Paint Shop. The move incorporates ambient temperature phosphate technology, developed in collaboration with PPG Asian Paints, which operates at 38°C compared to the conventional 42-50°C range. This innovative process is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1,800 tonne annually, furthering the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
The ambient temperature phosphate technology offers multiple advantages, including reduced fuel consumption, as there is no need for heating, leading to substantial savings in energy usage, as per press release. In addition to the environmental benefits, the technology improves process efficiency by simplifying operations and reducing maintenance needs.
Biju Balendran, Deputy Managing Director, JSW MG Motor India, commented, “Sustainability is embedded in our philosophy and drives our innovation. The new PT-ED line is a testament to our commitment to green manufacturing and our shared vision with PPG Asian Paints for a sustainable future. Through innovations like this, we’ve significantly reduced carbon emissions since 2022 and continue to work towards addressing environmental challenges.”
In 2022, JSW MG Motor India also became one of the first automotive brands globally to adopt the ‘ultrax degreaser’, a liquid alkaline degreasing cleaner developed by PPG Asian Paints. This, along with the use of High Throw Low Cure Cathodic Electro Coating Paint, has contributed to an annual CO2 reduction of 787 tonne. The company’s implementation of Low-temperature Phosphate (VERSABOND) and High Throw Low Cure Cathodic Electro Coating Paint has further contributed to a reduction of 325 tonne and 388 tons of CO2 per year, respectively.
With these initiatives, JSW MG Motor India has achieved a total reduction of 47 per cent in carbon emissions across its operations, claimed the company.
