Titan Plants Over 2 Lakh Saplings

India’s largest high-density afforestation effort aims to sequester 800 tonne of CO₂ annually, revive ecosystems, and inspire public-private ecological partnerships

In the Earth Day initiative, Titan Company has inaugurated Titan Vanam, a large-scale afforestation project in Thorapalli, Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Spanning 45 acre of once-degraded tropical thorn forest, the project has already seen the planting of over 208,000 saplings across two sites and is poised to become India’s largest high-density polyculture restoration effort, capable of sequestering 800 tonne of CO₂ equivalent annually for the next 20 years.

Titan Vanam was unveiled in the presence of senior leaders and dignitaries including C K Venkataraman, MD, Titan Company, N E Sridhar, Chief Sustainability Officer, and District Collector; Dinesh Kumar, IAS, alongside judges, forest officials, and restoration partners Biotasoil Foundation and Medius Earth.

The project began in December 2024, converting barren porambokku grazing land into a living, breathing forest ecosystem. Of the total area, 33 acres lie in Thorapalli and 12.5 acres in Billanakuppam. The sites are now home to 120 plus native species, with another 241 species identified through ecological surveys. Targeted removal of invasive plants and the introduction of organic soil amendments, beneficial microbes, and bio-fencing have accelerated the land’s regeneration.

Titan’s commitment doesn’t end with the plantation. The company has pledged three years of stewardship, including regular growth monitoring, maintenance of bio-fences, and active community engagement. The initiative not only targets carbon neutrality but also recharges groundwater, improves air quality, prevents soil erosion, and revives the local elephant corridor ecosystem.

“This isn’t just a plantation project,” said C K Venkataraman, MD of Titan. “It’s a living blueprint for climate-positive industrial action. Titan Vanam reflects our resolve to regenerate ecosystems—not in theory, but with real roots in the ground.”

About 10–15% of the forest area is reserved for endangered and rare species, including Acacia catechu, Tricalysia sphaerocarpa, Suregada angustifolia, and Tamil Nadu’s state flower, Gloriosa superba.

N E Sridhar, Titan’s CSO, added: “Titan Vanam is climate resilience in action. We’re not just restoring green cover—we’re establishing a replicable model for future-forward ecological transformation.”

Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Collector of Krishnagiri District, praised the initiative, stating, “Titan Vanam stands as a model of public-private environmental partnership. This effort shows how industry, civil society, and science can come together to reclaim degraded land and create lasting ecological and social value.”

With planting densities of 4,000 plus saplings per acre, Titan Vanam represents a science-backed, community-rooted, climate-conscious transformation—offering a tangible response to India’s environmental challenges, one tree at a time.
