UltraTech’s Naokari Mine Becomes India’s First To Earn 7-Star Rating for Limestone Mining

13 UltraTech mines recognised for sustainable practices by Indian Bureau of Mines

UltraTech Cement has etched its name in India’s mining history, with its Naokari Limestone Mine becoming the country’s first limestone mine to receive a 7-star rating from the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) for sustainable mining practices in FY 2023-24. The recognition was conferred at a felicitation ceremony held in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

In total, 13 of UltraTech’s limestone mines were recognised by the IBM under the Ministry of Mines, with one receiving a 7-star rating and the remaining 12 awarded 5-star ratings – marking the cement major’s second consecutive year of leading in 5-star-rated mines across all mineral categories.

Located in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, the Naokari Limestone Mine is part of UltraTech’s Awarpur Cement Works. It received the 7-star distinction for its exemplary initiatives in Zero-Waste Mining, such as integrating lime sludge and paper mill waste into its operations to enhance resource efficiency and extend the mine’s lifespan.

“The 7-star rating is a testament to our commitment to sustainable and responsible mining. Our goal is to align our operations with India’s green transition goals while empowering local communities,” said an UltraTech spokesperson.

Women at the Forefront of Mining InnovationAwarpur Cement Works was also lauded for its Dharanya Kanya Scheme, which trains women to operate heavy earth-moving machinery—a rare initiative in the mining sector. Additional sustainability efforts include installing floating solar panels and implementing waste heat recovery systems to reduce the carbon footprint of cement manufacturing.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, presented the awards, praising UltraTech’s leadership in implementing IBM’s Sustainable Development Framework. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also attended the event.

The IBM’s star rating framework evaluates mines on scientific and efficient operations, environmental compliance, use of renewable energy, mine closure preparedness, and local community welfare. The 7-star and 5-star ratings are the highest honours under this scheme.

The company said it will continue working closely with government bodies and communities to scale up green mining technologies, reduce waste, and support workforce diversity.
