E20 Ethanol Blending Safe For Vehicles, Environmentally Beneficial: Govt

Experts assert that ethanol blending is a science backed, climate friendly initiative strengthening India’s energy security and rural economy.

Amid rising concerns over the impact of 20 per cent ethanol blending (E20) in petrol on vehicle performance and consumer experience, experts and scientific studies confirm that such fears are largely unfounded. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed in a social media post.

A series of tests by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), and Indian Oil Corporation (R&D) found no significant mechanical issues in both carbureted and fuel-injected vehicles tested over 100,000 km.

Ethanol has a slightly lower energy density than petrol, the mileage reduction in E10 calibrated vehicles using E20 is marginal 1-2 per cent in four wheelers and around 3-6 per cent in others. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) confirms that E20 compatible vehicles have been available since April 2023, minimising such concerns.

Material corrosion concerns are addressed via BIS safety standards, with corrosion inhibitors and compatible fuel system materials in place. Even in older vehicles, only minor replacements may be needed after 20,000- 30,000 km typically handled during regular servicing.
Environmentally, ethanol blending significantly reduces carbon emissions. According to a Niti Aayog study, sugarcane and maize-based ethanol emits 65 per cent and 50 per cent less greenhouse gases, respectively, than petrol. Ethanol production now includes diverse feedstocks such as surplus grains and crop residues, bolstering sustainability.

Ethanol’s higher octane rating enhances vehicle performance, particularly in high-compression engines, and improves ride quality. Since 2014-15, India has saved over Rs 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange and reduced 700 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions, while also supporting farmers with over Rs 1.20 lakh crore in payments.
The rollout of E20 has followed a phased and well publicised roadmap, dismissing claims of abrupt implementation. Experts believe that ethanol blending is a science backed, climate friendly initiative strengthening India’s energy security and rural economy.
