Arunachal To Fast-track Green Energy Projects: CM Khandu

State targets Rs 2 lakh crore hydropower push, 19 GW capacity addition in three years

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday said the state will accelerate all green energy projects, revive stalled ones and promote public-private partnerships as part of a decade-long mission to become India’s “green energy powerhouse”.

Speaking at Independence Day celebrations at IG Park, Khandu said the government has declared 2025–35 as the ‘Decade of Hydropower’, with plans to harness the state’s unmatched potential in hydropower and critical minerals.
Khandu said marquee projects are progressing on schedule. The 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project is expected to be commissioned by May 2026, while the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project is on track for completion by February 2032.

“In the next three years alone, we will kick off work on new hydropower projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore, adding another 19 GW of capacity,” he said.

The government estimates these projects will bring in over Rs 4,000 crore annually as free power to the state, Rs 750 crore for local area development, and nearly Rs 2,000 crore in dividends. Around 30,000 direct jobs are expected during construction and operations. On the contentious Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), Khandu acknowledged opposition from the Adi community and said the government is pursuing detailed consultations.

“The government is mindful and appreciative of the concerns raised by our Adi brothers and sisters. We remain committed to consultations in all likely affected areas,” he said, thanking the people of Riga and Riew villages for signing an MoU supporting the project’s pre-feasibility report.

He emphasised the strategic significance of SUMP for both water management and national security.

Arunachal Pradesh secured 16,326 carbon credits in 2023-24 and is in advanced stages of approval for an additional 7,275 in 2024-25. Each credit reflects a reduction of 1,000 kilograms of carbon emissions.

“These efforts are not only critical for the environment but also open up new economic opportunities for our youth, entrepreneurs and local communities,” Khandu said.

The state is drafting the Arunachal Pradesh Energy Vision and Action Plan 2047, which will set clear targets for the next five, 10 and 22 years. “Green energy will be our strength, our export, and our identity,” he added.
