Vedanta Scales Up Renewable Energy Use To 2.6 Bn Units In FY25

Sustainability push powers 2 million homes, bioenergy and low-carbon products gain traction

On Akshay Urja Diwas, Vedanta said it consumed more than 2.6 billion units of renewable energy in FY25, up from 1.6 billion units in FY24. The near one-billion-unit jump reflects the metals-to-energy major’s accelerated shift to clean power. The consumption in FY25 alone could power nearly two million Indian homes for a year.

In the first quarter of FY26, the company has already used 850 million units of renewable energy, underscoring momentum in its transition. Vedanta has tied up renewable power delivery agreements totaling 1.9 gigawatts of capacity, slated to go on stream over the next few years.

Group companies Hindustan Zinc Limited and Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) are drawing renewable power for day-to-day operations. Hindustan Zinc, which also produces renewable energy, operates 273.5 megawatts of wind projects across five states.

Vedanta is diversifying beyond wind and solar into biomass. In FY25, it consumed 6.5 lakh gigajoules of biomass-based energy, equivalent to the annual needs of about 50,000 households. Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), its power arm, has supported the establishment of Punjab’s largest torrefied bio-pellets plant near its 1,980 MW facility in Mansa.
