Acme, Japan’s IHI To Build India’s Largest Green Ammonia Project In Odisha

0.4 MT annual capacity project targets exports to Japan by 2029-30
Acme Group and Japan’s IHI Corporation will jointly develop India’s largest green ammonia project at Gopalpur in Odisha, with a planned production capacity of 0.4 million tonne a year. The facility, slated for commissioning by 2029-30, will primarily serve Japan’s power and chemical sectors.
The project, which has secured land and completed its front-end engineering design (Feed), will be developed under a joint venture where IHI has taken a 30 per cent stake in Acme Clean Energy, while Acme retains 70 per cent. The initiative falls under the India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership and the Joint Declaration of Intent on Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia signed by the two Prime Ministers in August 2025.
According to Acme, the project will help cut more than 0.8 million tonne of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The company added that the collaboration is in line with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to position the country as a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The venture also aligns with Japan’s clean fuel strategy to decarbonise its energy and industrial sectors. Odisha’s eastern seaboard location and port infrastructure are expected to give the project a strong export advantage. Funding is likely to come from Japanese export credit agencies, international lenders and equity contributions from both partners.
