Apollo Tyres Unveils Its First-ever Mangrove Park For Public Access

Its efforts focus on raising awareness about the vital role of mangroves in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity

On 10 December 2024, Apollo Tyres disclosed the first-ever mangrove park for public access in Ernakulam, Kerala. Located in the scenic panchayath of Elamkunnapuzha on Vypeen, this 6-acre park features beautiful, interconnected islands and walkways. It is surrounded by sustainable fish farms run by MatsyaFed, improving the livelihoods of over 10 lakh fishermen. Recognized as a Ramsar Site, Vembanad’s ecological significance makes this park a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and conservation supporters.

The first phase of reviving the mangrove park focuses on four islands (under 2 acres) by removing invasive species and silt. This effort will also protect the habitat of vulnerable smooth-coated otters. Additionally, Apollo Tyres Foundation (ATF) will restore connecting bridges to ensure safe visitor access and promote appreciation for this vital ecosystem.

The launch featured key figures such as Chief Guest, K N Unnikrishnan, MLA, Vypeen, Ernakulam, Guest of Honour, Indhu Vijayan (IFS), Conservator of Forest Social Forestry Central Region, Dept of Forest and Wildlife, Kerala, Ms. Rinika Gover, Head Sustainability and CSR, Apollo Tyres, Mr.T Manoharan, Chairman, MatsyFed, Ms.Rasikala, President- Elamkunnapuzha Panchayat, Mr.T Raghuvaran, Member, Director Board, MatsyaFed, Ms. Latha Unniraj, Direct Board,MatsayFed and Mr.Suhair K, Manager, Commerce, MatsyaFed.

K N Unnikrishnan MLA Vypeen, lauded the crucial efforts of ATF in conserving mangroves, which are essential for the vulnerable otter’s habitat. He emphasized how ATF’s initiatives not only safeguard the environment but also bolster the livelihoods of local fishermen surrounding the mangrove park, effectively integrating ecological, social, and economic development for a sustainable future.

Prior to the devastating floods of 2018, the park attracted many visitors each weekend who supported our fish farm by purchasing fresh catches.
