Apollo Tyres Unveils Its First-ever Mangrove Park For Public Access
Its efforts focus on raising awareness about the vital role of mangroves in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity
Apollo Tyres has inaugurated a new Mangrove Park in Ernakulam, Kerala, marking the region’s first public-access mangrove conservation site. Located in the Elamkunnapuzha panchayat on Vypeen Island, the 6-acre park features interconnected islands and walkways, set amidst sustainable fish farms, enhancing its ecological importance.
The Apollo Tyres Foundation (ATF) has started the park’s initial revival phase, focusing on four islands spanning less than 2 acres. Efforts include removing invasive species and silt and safeguarding the habitat of the vulnerable smooth-coated otters. In addition, ATF is restoring connecting bridges to ensure safe access for visitors to the park.
Local officials attended the inauguration ceremony, including Shri K N Unnikrishnan, MLA of Vypeen, and Ms Indhu Vijayan, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Kerala. During the event, Shri Unnikrishnan emphasized the role of mangroves in supporting the environment and the livelihoods of local fishermen, noting the park’s potential to foster ecological and economic benefits.
Local fisherman Jackson James also expressed his support for the park’s restoration, highlighting its significance to the local fishing community, particularly before the 2018 floods. He noted that the park once attracted many visitors who contributed to the local fish farms.
Through its foundation, Apollo Tyres is also focusing on broader efforts related to mangrove conservation and afforestation across India. The company has reportedly reached over 50,000 individuals with its biodiversity initiatives as part of its commitment to sustainability.
