Bihar Commissions First Phase Of Rs 2,800 Cr Kajra Solar Project
185 MW solar plant with battery storage marks a major step in the state’s clean energy transition
In a significant push to Bihar’s renewable energy ambitions, the state government has commissioned the first phase of the Rs 2,800 crore Kajra Solar Power Project in Lakhisarai district. The project is aimed at increasing the share of clean energy in Bihar’s overall power mix and strengthening grid stability during peak demand hours.
Under the first phase, a 185-megawatt solar power plant has been developed along with a 254 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system at an estimated cost of Rs 1,810 crore. Officials said the supporting transmission line and transformer facility have been successfully energised, enabling power evacuation from the project site.
Battery Storage Boost
Manoj Kumar Singh, Energy Secretary, Bihar, and Chairman and Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, said the integrated battery energy storage system will allow the plant to supply uninterrupted electricity for four to five hours during peak demand periods. The storage component is expected to play a key role in managing intermittency associated with solar power generation.
The Kajra project is among Bihar’s largest renewable energy initiatives and reflects a broader policy push towards combining renewable generation with storage to ensure reliability and grid resilience.
Second Phase Under Way
Construction work on the second phase of the project is currently under progress. This phase involves setting up an additional 116 megawatt solar power plant along with a 241 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,055 crore.
According to officials, the state government aims to commission the entire project by January 2027.
Once fully completed, the Kajra Solar Power Plant will have a total installed capacity of 301 megawatt, supported by a cumulative battery energy storage capacity of 495 megawatt-hour. The project is expected to significantly contribute to Bihar’s long-term renewable energy and energy security goals.
