BPCL & Sembcorp Join Forces To Drive India’s Low-carbon Transition

Joint venture to explore green hydrogen, renewable energy, and emerging clean fuel technologies across India
Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), a Fortune Global 500 company and one of India’s leading energy players has entered into a joint venture agreement with Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private (SGHIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries. This partnership aims to propel India’s energy transition through the development of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across the country.
The newly formed joint venture will explore a broad portfolio of clean energy initiatives, including green hydrogen and green ammonia production, bunkering solutions, port decarbonisation, and other next-generation low-carbon technologies. This collaboration brings together BPCL’s vast infrastructure and domain expertise in the petroleum sector with Sembcorp’s experience in renewable energy and sustainability.
Commenting on the joint venture, G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, stated, “BPCL’s collaboration with Sembcorp marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable tomorrow. We aim to leverage our shared expertise and ambition to develop world-class green hydrogen and renewable energy solutions that support India’s climate goals. This partnership also aligns with BPCL’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2040 and building a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio.”
Vipul Tuli, President & CEO of Renewables, West, and CEO of Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp, echoed the sentiment, saying, “This partnership reflects our shared vision to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors through scalable, low-carbon solutions. With Sembcorp’s expertise in renewable assets and BPCL’s strong market presence, we are confident in our ability to support India’s ambitious energy transition.”
Sembcorp, which currently manages a 6 GW renewables portfolio in India, is advancing the use of green hydrogen and ammonia as strategic decarbonisation pathways. Through this collaboration, the joint venture will focus on creating integrated, cost-efficient green energy solutions that can power India’s industrial, transportation, and port infrastructure while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
As India intensifies its push towards clean energy and carbon neutrality, the BPCL-Sembcorp joint venture represents a critical step in developing the technologies and infrastructure required to support a sustainable energy future.
