Brazil Commits $107 Mn To Accelerate Amazon Bioeconomy At COP30

Four-year initiative in five Amazon states targets 50 cooperatives, 3,500 families and higher-value bioeconomy products

Brazil has introduced the Coopera+ Amazônia programme, a nearly R$107 million plan to strengthen 50 extractivist cooperatives working with babassu, açaí, Brazil nut and cupuaçu across Pará, Rondônia, Maranhão, Amazonas and Acre over 48 months. Announced in the Green Zone at COP30, the initiative is expected to benefit about 3,500 families by adding value to forest products, raising household incomes and improving cooperative structures in the Legal Amazon.

Funding And Implementing Agencies
Coopera+ Amazônia will receive USD 103 million from the Amazon Fund through the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA). Sebrae will contribute USD 3.7 million. The programme is jointly run by the MMA, BNDES, the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC), Embrapa and Sebrae.

Core Interventions
The programme will support cooperatives through consultancy, training, technical assistance, rural extension and the purchase of machinery to reduce the physical strain of extractivist work and increase processing capacity. It aims to improve management practices, productivity, product quality and access to domestic and international markets. The plan also includes a Territorial Business Office to help cooperatives grow their commercial networks and build stronger brands, while Sebrae-backed Local Innovation Agents will monitor technological and managerial progress. Embrapa’s survey of appropriate machinery for sociobiodiversity chains will guide decisions on mechanisation.

Amazon Fund And Climate Goals
The initiative is financed by the Amazon Fund, Brazil’s main international cooperation mechanism for forest protection and sustainable development in the Legal Amazon. Managed by BNDES under MMA coordination, the Fund supports deforestation control, sustainable value chains and the protection of Indigenous and traditional communities. Coopera+ Amazônia aligns with Brazil’s national climate targets, the Paris Agreement and the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAm), with the broader aim of making forest-based livelihoods more economically competitive than deforestation-driven activity.
