Building A Future-focused Consumer Brand
Godrej Consumer Products leads with efficient manufacturing, focusing on reducing waste and promoting greener product alternatives
As a company deeply integrated with nature-dependent value chains, Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) has focused on implementing initiatives with a lasting environmental impact while boosting local livelihoods. “We have integrated climate change risks into our Enterprise Risk Management system, conducting scenario analyses to prepare for the physical and financial impacts of climate change on our operations,” says Ram Vaidyanathan, AVP & Head of Environmental Sustainability, Godrej Industries Group.
Comprehensive Approach
GCPL’s sustainability approach is holistic, encompassing climate action, water stewardship and biodiversity conservation. Through its watershed programs, the company has recharged over 15 times the amount of water it consumes, and it plans to restore 15 hectares of land through afforestation projects using indigenous species. In addition, the company is conducting biodiversity risk assessments across its manufacturing plants, creating a biodiversity register and risk ratings for each site. This enables Godrej to manage environmental impacts effectively while preserving regional ecosystems.
One of the key ways Godrej integrates sustainability into its product development is by focusing on eco-friendly solutions without passing on high costs to consumers. Its R&D team plays a pivotal role in developing products that are not only affordable but also environmentally friendly. “We believe in making sustainable choices accessible to a wider audience. Our green products, such as the Godrej Magic Floor Cleaner, offer a ‘green discount’ rather than a premium, helping consumers afford eco-conscious choices,” Vaidyanathan explains. This product uses 94 per cent less plastic and 72 per cent less paper than traditional alternatives, while its compact packaging reduces transportation emissions.
Achieving Targets
In line with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2035, GCPL has made substantial progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company is closely monitoring its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, setting short-term reduction targets, and working towards long-term sustainability goals in alignment with the Paris Agreement. It has also committed to doubling its energy productivity by 2030 as part of the Climate Group’s EP100 initiative.
Godrej aims to enhance sustainability further within its operations and supply chain. The company engages more deeply with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions and embed sustainable practices throughout its supply chain. Additionally, it continues to explore ways to reduce its reliance on plastic packaging by increasing the use of post-consumer recycled materials and
exploring plastic alternatives. “We are fundamentally rethinking our approach to integrate sustainability deeply into everything we do,” states Vaidyanathan.
