Cairn Oil & Gas Achieves Net Water Positive Status

On World Water Day 2025, Cairn Oil & Gas reaffirms its commitment to water sustainability with advanced conservation practices, community support, and cutting-edge water recycling initiatives
Cairn Oil and Gas, part of the Vedanta Group, has claimed that it continues to maintain its status as a net water-positive company for the third consecutive year. The company, which is India’s largest private oil and gas exploration and production entity, has also highlighted its efforts in water conservation, having recycled approximately 7 lakh kilolitres (kL) of water over the past five years.
Cairn’s water management strategy includes using saline water to meet more than 99 per cent of its operational water needs, thereby reducing the strain on freshwater resources. The company has also achieved a 97 per cent rate of produced water recycling through reinjection, exceeding global industry benchmarks. In addition, Cairn’s water recycling rate reached 85 per cent in FY25.
The company said that it has also undertaken several community water initiatives. In Rajasthan, Cairn has developed over 1,100 rainwater harvesting structures under its Barmer Unnati project, creating a potential annual rainwater harvesting capacity of 2.35 million kL. The company plans to build over 100 more structures in the region by the end of 2025, which would increase the potential harvest to 3 million kL annually. In Assam, Cairn has installed seven tubewells in Pas Chamua village, ensuring access to clean drinking water for local residents.
Cairn’s water-related initiatives align with the theme of World Water Day 2025, which focuses on glacier preservation, and the company continues to work towards improving its environmental footprint and contributing to the well-being of the communities where it operates.
