Collaboration: Key Strategy For Addressing Climate Crises
The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS), renowned for its significant contributions to the climate discourse, commenced on 7 February with a unique focus on “Climate Action, Peace and Spirituality”
Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, highlighted the need to recognise the sacredness of our relationship with nature, emphasising the profound impact of human intentions and actions on the ongoing climate crisis. In a similar vein, Professor Hoesung Lee, Former IPCC chair, emphasised the alarming statistics revealing a 15-fold increase in human mortality from floods, droughts and storms in regions unaffected by climate change over the past decade.
Deepali Khanna, Vice President of Asia at The Rockefeller Foundation, underscored the global nature of climate change and sustainable development, stressing the importance of international cooperation and negotiation. Discussions throughout the day revolved around themes such as the interconnectedness of climate change with other global issues, the potential for growth through climate action and the imperative for sustainable agriculture.
The participation of notable dignitaries including the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar and Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav. Nitin Desai, Chairman of TERI, emphasised the need for international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges, noting the interconnectedness of environmental and developmental issues.
Vice President Dhankhar highlighted the significance of forums like WSDS in fostering collective commitment towards addressing global challenges, stressing the importance of transitioning to clean and renewable energy sources. Minister Yadav reiterated India’s commitment to climate justice, emphasising the right to access clean energy for all citizens.
According to media reports the message conveyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of courage, determination and collective action in pursuing a more sustainable and equitable world, where every individual can thrive in harmony with nature.
