Driving Efficiency In Tyre Production

Apollo Tyres integrates advanced manufacturing techniques, minimising waste and improving energy efficiency across operations

Apollo Tyres has made sustainability a critical pillar of its business, reflecting its commitment to environmental responsibility and alignment with global goals. A key milestone for Apollo Tyres has been the completion of its Double Materiality Assessment. “This assessment allowed us to understand how sustainability factors influence our financial health and their broader impact on people and the planet. Climate change emerged as one of the top five sustainability issues, and in response, we developed a decarbonisation roadmap,” says Rinika Grover, Head of Sustainability & CSR, Apollo Tyres.

This roadmap has been fundamental in setting the stage for the company’s net-zero ambitions, with Apollo committing to the Science Based Targets initiative and making significant investments in energy-efficient technologies.

Prioritising Sustainable Processes

In line with its decarbonisation efforts, Apollo Tyres has focused on expanding its renewable energy mix. The company’s renewable energy use increased from 14.3 per cent to 22.7 per cent in FY23, with the Andhra Pradesh plant operating entirely on biofuel. This shift reduces Apollo Tyres’ carbon footprint and highlights the company’s ambition to make its manufacturing processes more sustainable. “Our plant in Andhra Pradesh has been using 100 per cent biofuel, and other plants are exploring alternative fuels to further our sustainability goals,” Grover adds.

Apollo Tyres’ holistic approach to sustainability is evident across its value chain, particularly in raw material sourcing and waste management. The company is targeting 40 per cent renewable and recycled input materials by 2030. To achieve this, Apollo Tyres has collaborated with the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber, sourcing rubber from suppliers who commit to sustainability throughout their supply chains. Additionally, the company has initiated projects incorporating recycled materials into new production cycles. This shift towards circularity is crucial for reducing reliance on virgin materials and minimising waste.

Innovating for the Future

Apollo Tyres is leveraging digital technologies to optimise resource use and improve efficiency across its manufacturing processes. With digital hubs in London and Hyderabad, the company employs data scientists to enhance resource optimisation using state-of-the-art technologies. By deploying IoT-enabled machines, Apollo Tyres collects valuable data that helps maximise asset utilisation, reduce capital expenditure, and improve production efficiency. “Through IoT and cloud data analytics, we’ve been able to identify inefficiencies and take corrective actions, significantly improving our resource utilisation,” Grover explains.

As Apollo Tyres remains committed to advancing its sustainability initiatives, it invests in renewable energy, sustainable sourcing and innovative waste
