Gujarat Targets Rooftop Solar Installations On 1 Mn Homes By 2027

State pushes PM Surya Ghar scheme on World Energy Conservation Day

Gujarat aims to install rooftop solar systems on one million households by 2027 as part of its efforts to cut power costs and promote energy conservation, state energy and petrochemicals minister Rushikesh Patel said on Sunday, 14 December 2025.

Speaking on the occasion of World Energy Conservation Day, Patel said the state government was actively promoting rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, with incentives aimed at accelerating household participation.

“The PM Surya Ghar scheme is being incentivised by the government in a big way. We intend to install one million solar rooftop systems by the year 2027 in Gujarat. This will substantially reduce electricity costs,” Patel said in a video statement. He added that energy conservation should be a shared responsibility across government, industry and consumers.

Patel said World Energy Conservation Day was observed globally to draw attention to the environmental and economic costs of electricity generation through conventional sources. He noted that Gujarat had emerged as a leading state in rooftop solar deployment, reflecting a broader shift towards decentralised renewable energy.

The rooftop solar push forms part of Gujarat’s wider clean energy strategy, which includes large-scale solar parks as well as distributed generation through households and commercial buildings. Officials say rooftop systems help reduce pressure on the grid while lowering electricity bills for consumers.

India has been expanding rooftop solar capacity to support national targets for non-fossil fuel power generation, with state governments playing a key role in implementation. Gujarat’s latest target signals a continued focus on scaling household-level solar adoption as part of the energy transition.
