Henkel Leads Mangrove Cleanup Drive In Navi Mumbai On World Environment Day

Marking World Environment Day 2025, Henkel India, in collaboration with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), spearheaded a large-scale mangrove cleanup near TS Chanakya, Navi Mumbai. The initiative mobilised around 100 volunteers, reinforcing the importance of community-led environmental action under this year’s global theme – “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”

Participants included Henkel employees, NMMC officials, and college students, all united in the mission to tackle plastic pollution in one of the city’s most fragile and biodiverse coastal belts.

Restoring Navi Mumbai’s Natural Shield
The mangroves in Navi Mumbai play a critical role in maintaining the city’s ecological balance — acting as natural buffers against storm surges, reducing air pollution, and serving as biodiversity havens for migratory birds like flamingos and kingfishers. But these vital ecosystems are under growing threat from plastic and non-biodegradable waste.

“The cleanup drive reflects Henkel’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and community action,” said S. Sunil Kumar, Country President, Henkel India. “We’re grateful for the support from NMMC and our volunteers, whose efforts brought this initiative to life. Local, consistent action is key to lasting environmental impact.”

The drive resulted in the removal and segregation of nearly 5,000 kilogram of waste, offering immediate relief to the mangrove habitat and helping restore a crucial defence line against coastal erosion and climate change.

More Than a Day: Building a Community Movement
Following the cleanup, volunteers gathered in a reflection circle, many pledging to carry forward the message of restoration in their own communities. Henkel and NMMC announced plans to organise quarterly cleanups, awareness workshops, and guided nature walks, aiming to foster deeper community engagement and education around ecological preservation.

The initiative adds to Henkel’s broader sustainability agenda in the region, supported by long-term partnerships with local authorities to protect Navi Mumbai’s green and blue spaces.
