India Adds 11.3 GW Solar Capacity In Q2 2025, Highest Ever Quarterly Growth: Report

Large-scale projects contributed 20 per cent higher year-on-year growth, with Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra leading installations
India installed 11.3 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in the second quarter (Q2) of calendar year 2025, marking its highest-ever quarterly addition and a 145 per cent year-on-year rise compared to 4.6 GW in Q2 2024, according to Mercom India Research.
The installations were also up 67 per cent from 6.8 GW in Q1 2025. In the first half (1H) of 2025, total solar capacity additions reached 18 GW, up 31 per cent over the same period last year. Large-scale projects contributed 20 per cent higher year-on-year growth, with Rajasthan (33.7 per cent), Gujarat (27 per cent) and Maharashtra (17.4 per cent) leading installations.
India’s cumulative solar capacity reached 116.4 GW by June 2025, with utility-scale projects accounting for 86 per cent and rooftop solar contributing 14 per cent. Rajasthan and Gujarat led cumulative large-scale additions with 29 per cent and 18 per cent shares, respectively, followed by Karnataka at 13 per cent.
Report noted that commissioning accelerated in Q2 due to regulatory deadlines and developers’ push for partial commissioning ahead of the June 2025 inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charge waiver deadline. Solar power accounted for 64 per cent of new power capacity additions during the quarter.
As of June 2025, India’s utility-scale solar pipeline stood at 191 GW, with another 131 GW of projects tendered and pending auction. However, tendering and auction activity slowed sharply in 1H 2025 tenders totalled 20.6 GW, down 58 per cent year-on-year, while auctioned capacity fell 74 per cent to 8.1 GW from 31.8 GW in 1H 2024.
