India to Lead Global Bioeconomy Revolution, Says Union Minister Jitendra Singh

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, has declared that India is poised to lead a global revolution in the bioeconomy. Speaking at the launch of the BioE3 policy, he highlighted that the future economy will be driven by bio-based industries, with India at the forefront, leveraging its untapped resources and biomanufacturing potential.

In a statement, he said, “The future economy will be bio-driven. India will lead the Bioeconomy revolution, leveraging unexplored resources & biomanufacturing potential, unlike the West-led IT revolution.” His remarks underscore the government’s commitment to positioning India as a global leader in the rapidly evolving bioeconomy sector.

The BioE3 policy, recently unveiled by Singh, is designed to propel India’s bioeconomy to new heights, with projections indicating a rise from USD 130 billion in 2024 to USD 300 billion by 2030. The policy focuses on key areas such as bio-based chemicals and enzymes, functional foods, precision biotherapeutics, and climate-resilient agriculture, aligning with national initiatives like the ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy.

Singh highlighted that India’s rich biodiversity, particularly the unique bioresources in the Himalayas and the extensive coastline, provides a significant advantage in the global economic landscape. The policy’s emphasis on biomanufacturing and foundries is expected to drive “Green Growth,” fostering sustainable development across various sectors including food, energy, and health.

The minister also pointed out that this revolution in biotechnology, unlike the IT revolution that was led by the West, will be driven by India, capitalising on its unique strengths and resources.

Singh’s vision for India’s bioeconomy not only aims to strengthen the nation’s economic growth but also positions India as a global leader in sustainable development. With the BioE3 policy, India is set to make significant strides in the bioeconomy, transforming its vast biological resources into a key driver of future economic success.
