India’s First Multi-Distribution CBG Plant Begins Commercial Gas Supply In Haryana

Kaithal-based facility to inject biogas into city gas grid, sets new benchmark for waste-to-energy projects
India’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant with multi-distribution capabilities has begun commercial gas offtake and injection into the city gas distribution (CGD) grid in Kaithal, Haryana, marking a key milestone in the country’s clean energy journey.
The 10-tonne-per-day (TPD) plant, developed by Demeter Agro Energies in collaboration with CEID Consultants and Engineering as the EPC partner and supported by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), is designed to supply CBG through various channels including MDPE pipelines, stainless steel pipeline injection, and cylinder cascade bottling. This flexibility enables reliable gas delivery to both urban and rural consumers.
The inauguration saw senior IGL leadership including Managing Director Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, Director (Commercial) Mohit Bhatia, and Executive Director Sh. Sanjeev Kumar Bhatia visiting the Village Balwanti-based facility along with other dignitaries from Demeter and CEID.
Initially supplying 4 TPD of gas via pipelines, the plant is expected to inject regular volumes into the CGD network with IGL’s support. With a daily production capacity of 25,000 cubic metres of biogas, the plant converts organic feedstock like pressmud and spentwash into clean, renewable energy.
Additionally, it produces 50 TPD of fermented organic manure (FOM), promoting regenerative agriculture and circular economy principles in the region.
Highlighting the plant’s technical prowess, Rajaram Prajapati, Founder and CTO of CEID, said, “We’re currently achieving 97.54 per cent gas purity, designed to exceed 99 per cent, with oxygen levels consistently under 0.2 per cent. Our gas generation and purification systems have been reviewed and appreciated by IGL for their compliance, safety, and engineering integrity.”
Prajapati added that India’s first CBG-specific steel pipeline injection system will be started from this plant. “Kaithal will serve as a model facility for the industry, demonstrating standards in pressure management, gas quality, and CGD integration.”
The project supports the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and is aligned with PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat and waste-to-wealth initiatives, aiming to reduce emissions, enhance energy security, and promote sustainable rural development.
As the CBG sector scales up, the Kaithal plant is poised to become a template for future installations across the country, combining green energy generation with agricultural innovation.
