Innovating For A Sustainable Industrial Future
ABB India drives energy-efficient solutions and sustainable automation to reduce environmental impact across industries
ABB India has made remarkable progress in its sustainability journey, aligning its operations with India’s long-term net-zero goals. As a key player in electrification and automation, ABB India has integrated sustainable practices across its business operations and product offerings. In 2023, the company reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 88 per cent compared to its 2019 baseline, a significant achievement that shows its commitment to decarbonisation.
“We have strengthened our circularity approach, reducing waste sent to landfills and increasing life cycle assessments for our products, which promote eco-design and transparency for our customers,” says Rajesh Jha, Country Environment & Sustainability Manager, ABB India.
Strengthening Foundation
ABB India’s sustainability efforts focus on several pillars, one of which is its commitment to resource conservation. All ABB units in India are certified green by the Indian Green Building Council, with 50 per cent of its factories being water-positive. In addition, the company has eliminated the use of single-use plastics across all its operations. ABB has also been a leader in integrating renewable energy (RE) into its operations. “We have achieved our RE100 commitment since 2022, eliminating 100 per cent of our Scope 2 GHG emissions from operations through in-house solar panel installations and the procurement of renewable energy,” adds Jha.
Energy Focus
Energy efficiency remains a core focus for ABB India. The company has undertaken multiple initiatives, such as replacing conventional lighting with LEDs, enhancing compressor efficiency, and upgrading motors to IE3/IE4 standards to reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, ABB’s energy-efficient motors, such as the IE4 and IE5 models, have played a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of industrial processes. The company’s ongoing ‘energy efficiency movement’ has raised awareness and driven actions across industries, with partnerships like those with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) further amplifying its impact.
In addition to its internal efforts, ABB India offers sustainable solutions for industries. These include energy management systems, energy storage and digital solutions like ABB Ability, which helps businesses optimise operations and reduce emissions.
Future Ready
Looking ahead, ABB India remains committed to its 2030 sustainability agenda, which includes increasing the use of renewable energy, reducing waste, and achieving zero waste to landfill across its operations. The company also plans to promote using recycled materials in its products to enhance circularity. Jha explains, “Our sustainable products and solutions will positively impact the environment by increasing energy and resource efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
ABB’s approach to instilling a sustainability mindset across the organisation is equally strong. Through continuous training, awareness programs and employee engagement initiatives, ABB ensures that sustainability is not just a corporate goal but a shared responsibility.
