Kerala Prepares Green Hydrogen Policy, Targets Carbon Neutrality By 2050

Kerala has secured approval from the Union Ministry of Science and Technology to implement the Rs 133.18 crore Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster project
The Kerala government is in the process of finalising a green hydrogen policy, with discussions underway across departments. The draft framework, prepared by the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT), has been submitted to the state government and is expected to receive clearance soon.
As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Kerala has secured approval from the Union Ministry of Science and Technology to implement the Rs 133.18 crore Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster project under ANERT. This is one of four such projects sanctioned nationwide.
In its pilot phase, the state aims to produce 57 tonne of green hydrogen, with applications planned in heavy road transport, houseboats and other sectors. While green hydrogen remains a costlier energy source, the government sees it as crucial in reducing carbon emissions.
The initiative is aligned with Kerala’s long-term target of becoming a carbon-neutral state by 2050.
