Levi Strauss Initiates Energy Accelerator In India To Reduce Carbon Footprints

Denim maker’s Leap initiative to help Indian suppliers shift to renewable power and cut emissions

Levi Strauss and Co. has started a programme in India aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption across its supply chain. The LS&Co. Energy Accelerator Programme (Leap), developed in collaboration with Schneider Electric will enable textile and apparel suppliers to access renewable electricity supporting the company’s target to reduce supply chain emissions by 42 per cent by 2030, relative to 2022 levels, with a long-term aim of net zero by 2050.

Leap will provide suppliers with training, financial guidance, and Schneider Electric’s advisory services alongside favourable pricing and return-on-investment models to facilitate renewable electricity procurement. Suppliers may adopt on-site solar, renewable energy certificates or participate in a multi-buyer power purchase agreement.

The initiative has received endorsement from India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, reflecting a growing alignment between corporate decarbonisation efforts and national renewable energy goals. Drawing on prior experience, including multi-buyer PPA participation under Walmart’s US-based Gigaton programme, Leap is positioned to replicate proven models within the Indian context.
