Marico Achieves Major Sustainability Milestones With Renewable Energy And Carbon Neutrality
67 per cent of energy needs are met through renewables and sets bold net-zero targets by 2030 and 2040, says the company
On National Energy Conservation Day, Marico, one of India’s FMCG companies, said that it has progressed in reducing its environmental footprint through the increased use of renewable energy. As of FY24, 67.4 per cent of Marico’s operational energy requirements, both electricity and thermal, are now met by renewable sources, with a major achievement being the near-total transition to bio-based briquettes. This transition has enabled Marico to meet over 90 per cent of its thermal energy needs through renewable sources.
Guided by its sustainability vision for 2030, Marico has made substantial strides towards its goal of achieving net-zero emissions in India by 2030 and across global operations by 2040. The company recently reported a 79 per cent reduction in direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) in FY23-24, compared to the base year FY13, as part of its ongoing commitment to minimizing its environmental impact.
Marico’s Perundurai facility, which operates almost entirely on renewable energy, has been certified as carbon neutral for four consecutive years, claimed the company. Additionally, the Sanand unit in Gujarat achieved a remarkable 2.8 times increase in its renewable energy share in FY24, further driving Marico’s push towards a more sustainable manufacturing process.
Amit Bhasin, Chief Legal Officer at Marico, emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, highlighting initiatives like transitioning to coal-free operations and deploying agro-fuel based boilers. He noted that Marico continues to innovate with cleaner energy sources and has integrated sustainability throughout its value chain, from sourcing to distribution.
With a focus on strategic themes like climate change, circular economy, and responsible sourcing, Marico aims to build a sustainable future and reduce its environmental impact across all its global operations.
As Marico progresses towards its sustainability goals, it said that it remains committed to shaping a healthier planet for future generations while fostering sustainable growth through its diverse product portfolio.
