MoS Kriti Vardhan Singh Calls For Emission Disclosure In Electronic Ads
Electronic devices should include information about the amount of emissions they produce in their product advertisements, said Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change while speaking at an industry event on Thursday in New Delhi.
While speaking at the Assocham Environment and Carbon Conference 2024, Singh added that this could help raise awareness. Ultimately, it is the actions and attitudes of individuals that will make a difference.
On environmental awareness, the minister also emphasised the need to consider financial incentives. However, he stressed that the most important incentive for us is the kind of environment we leave for future generations.
Maintaining the balance between development goals and environmental sustainability is the need of the hour. The minister also threw light on this aspect.
“As a democratic country, we face a paradox. We must meet people’s needs and desires while also considering individual life goals. We have a commitment to providing for people living in rural areas who still lack access to basic necessities,” Singh stated.
Notably, India has set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, as part of its efforts to combat climate change. This goal is in line with the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Milind Deore Secretary, Bureau of Energy Efficiency highlighted, “India has the highest score in the current performance index among G20 countries.”
As industry is a very important stakeholder in combating climate change this makes industry and government collaboration crucial to achieving India’s ambitious climate target.
Anand Rai, Vice President and Head (Sustainability), JSW and Co-Chair, of Assocham Environment and Climate Change Council also observed that initiatives have been taken by the industry, such as the use of technology to reduce emissions, which has also led to an improvement in our ranking.
