NHAI Plantes 402.28 lakhs Trees Along National Highways: Centre
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has reported significant progress in its Green Highways Policy, implemented in 2015 to create more sustainable road infrastructure across India. According to a recent update, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has overseen the planting of 402.28 lakh trees along the country’s national highways.
This large-scale plantation drive aligns with the policy’s objectives to address various environmental concerns. The Green Highways Policy aims to reduce air pollution and dust, provide shade on hot roads, mitigate noise pollution from increasing vehicle traffic, prevent soil erosion on embankment slopes, and create natural barriers against headlight glare.
The initiative involves multiple stakeholders in the planting process, including Self Help Groups (SHGs), private agencies, state forest departments, and contractors. To ensure effective implementation and monitoring, the ministry has established a dedicated Plantation Cell. This cell oversees all plantation projects through regional offices of NHAI, NHIDCL, and other relevant agencies.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the Green Highways Policy also aims to generate employment opportunities for local communities involved in planting and maintaining the green corridors.
While the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways focuses primarily on national highways, it encourages state governments to consider similar green initiatives for roads under their jurisdiction.
The Green Highways Policy represents a step towards balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation in India. As the country continues to expand its road network, this initiative demonstrates a commitment to incorporating sustainable practices into major infrastructure projects.
