Oil India Initiates Carbon Capture And Storage Project To Advance Net-Zero Objectives

To maximise the market value of the gas, the company intends to establish a gas-sweetening plant to extract CO₂

With the start of a carbon capture and storage project, state-backed Oil India is making major strides in the direction of environmentally sustainable practices. The goal of this project is to collect and safely store carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from Oil India’s Rajasthani natural gas field in dry wells. This calculated action is consistent with the business’s goal of having net-zero emissions by 2040.

In his presentation of the company’s net-zero plan, Ranjit Rath outlined a number of efforts, with the Jaisalmer field acting as a primary emphasis. Because the gas produced here has a significant CO₂ component, Oil India wants to build a gas-sweetening facility to extract CO₂ and increase the gas’s market value.

According to Rath, Oil India is well-positioned to carry out these carbon sequestration operations because of its vast subsurface knowledge and access to suitable dry wells for CO2 storage. After preliminary research, the business plans to hire a consultant to create a detailed feasibility report that details the procedures for carbon capture, transportation, storage, and monitoring.

Two of the five dry wells that were initially chosen will be the focus of a pilot study that will involve dynamic modelling. Oil India understands the need of carbon capture technologies but also the accompanying expenses. Similar ventures have had funding difficulties in India, and most of these projects worldwide are still in the experimental stage. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil encountered obstacles in advancing their project because of increased expenses, underscoring the financial implications of carbon capture programmes.

Global corporations such as ExxonMobil and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company(ADNOC) are investing in carbon capture as a climate solution, despite financial restrictions, with the goal of reducing emissions while maintaining the production of fossil fuels. Oil India’s dedication to carbon capture and storage is indicative of the industry’s growing understanding of the need to strike a balance between environmental responsibility and energy development.
