Over 25 Lakh Homes Install Rooftop Solar Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Milestone signals rapid uptake of decentralised solar power as government pushes toward one crore rooftop installations by 2026–27

The government has said that more than twenty-five lakh households in India have installed rooftop solar systems under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy efforts. This achievement reflects rapidly growing interest among homeowners in generating their own electricity and reducing reliance on the grid, driven by rising awareness of renewable energy benefits and supportive policy measures.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the surge in residential solar installations shows that the scheme is gaining traction. Under the programme, eligible households receive financial support to set up solar panels on their rooftops, helping lower electricity costs and cut carbon emissions. The initiative is part of the government’s broader push to expand clean energy across the country and move toward its renewable energy goals.

The Surya Ghar scheme was introduced with an ambitious target of reaching one crore homes with rooftop solar systems by the financial year 2026-27. Progress toward that long-term objective has been noticeable, with states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh among those contributing strongly to the uptake. Observers say that simplified application procedures and direct subsidy transfers have helped boost participation from urban and rural consumers alike.

Officials also note that residential solar installations are becoming an important element of India’s overall renewable energy mix, complementing large-scale solar parks and utility-led projects. The milestone underlines the growing role of decentralised clean energy solutions in the nation’s transition to sustainable power.
