The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is actively developing a plan for the restoration of mangroves in Ennore Creek, where ongoing oil spill mitigation efforts are underway, according to Additional Chief Secretary Supriya Sahu.
This restoration initiative will be executed in collaboration with specialised agencies such as the Centre for Environmental Studies, Anna University, and the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). Sahu, who oversees the Environment, Climate Change, and Forest Department, made this statement following a comprehensive review of the progress of oil spill mitigation work in Ennore.
As part of the review, the assessment of the impact of the oil spill on mangroves in the Ennore Creek area was a key focus. The state is proactively engaging specialised cleaning agencies in the mitigation process, with significant progress noted.
These agencies are nearing completion in the removal of floating oil and have commenced clearing oil deposits from shores, boulders, and oil-laden debris, as stated in an official release.
The release also highlighted the successful completion of beach cleaning work in Nettukuppam, Ennore Kuppam, and Mugathuvaram Kuppam villages.
Additionally, a high-level coordination meeting was conducted on-site by the Additional Chief Secretary, bringing together various stakeholders, including the Coast Guard, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), Health Department, Revenue, Fire and Rescue, Fisheries, TN Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), and the Environment and Forest Department.
This coordinated effort aims to enhance the effectiveness of the overall response to the oil spill and its environmental repercussions.
