Sustainability Non-negotiable In India’s Growth Path, Says Piyush Goyal

Commerce Minister calls for harmonised global standards to drive trade, quality and climate action

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has said sustainability is ‘non-negotiable’ in India’s development journey, underlining the government’s mission to foster a nationwide culture of quality and environmental responsibility.

Speaking at an exhibition event in New Delhi, Goyal said sustainability was a natural pillar of India’s growth as respect for nature was deeply ingrained in Indian culture and tradition.

He emphasised that harmonising global standards would not only improve product quality but also facilitate free trade, expand open markets and enable stronger international collaboration. “High-quality standards are central to India’s rise as the fastest-growing large economy,” he noted.

The Minister said initiatives such as the IEC platform play a crucial role in developing common practices, ensuring economic cooperation and building trust in products and services across borders. He pointed out that quality standards serve as a lever for consumer protection, competitiveness and climate resilience.

Reaffirming India’s commitment to its climate pledges under the Paris Agreement and successive COP summits, Goyal said the country pursues sustainability not due to external pressure but as a responsible global citizen. He highlighted efforts to promote the circular economy, cut waste and conserve resources.

Citing the government’s Quality Control Orders (QCOs) in areas such as toys, he said strict adherence to standards had transformed industries by eliminating substandard products and improving consumer safety. He reiterated PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect’ vision, which links manufacturing excellence with minimal environmental impact.

Goyal also underscored the role of the electrical and electronic industries in advancing energy efficiency and reducing pollution. As India shifts from electrical to electronic solutions, he said, the sector could play a significant role in lowering energy use while sustaining product quality.

Calling for international cooperation, the Minister urged the global community to work together towards ‘a standardised, safe and sustainable future’ where quality and sustainability go hand in hand with economic growth.
